Registers of Christian Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths
1866 - 1867 (in process)

Home

The Roman Catholic Parish of Saint Thomas the Apostle was formed January 1, 1845 by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Ignatius Aloysius Reynolds, Bishop of Charleston. He appointed the Rev. Thomas Murphy as Pastor of the congregation. The Gothic Revival style St. Thomas Church was constructed under Murphy’s supervision and was completed by 1847. After Murphy’s death in 1863, the Rev. James Andrew Corcoran D.D. assumed charge of St. Thomas Parish. He was assisted by the Rev. Henry Pinckney Northrop, who later became the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Charleston (1883).

This is a continuing series of St. Thomas Baptism, Marriage and Death Registers by Joseph Sheppard. The series began in the winter Clarendon Courier,  Vol 11, No. 1, 1999 with the 1845 records and concluded in the winter edition, Vol. 14., No. 1, 2002 with the 1865 records. (Back issues are available from the Old New Hanover Genalogical Society.) The registers were read from microfilm housed in the Special Collections Department of the New Hanover Public Library. Names, first and last, are bolded for easy scanning. Baptisms list the child or adult, parents (P.P.), sponsors (S.S.) and the officiating priest. Marriages include bride and groom, witnesses (W.W.) and presiding minister. Deaths are recorded with the name of the deceased and serving clergyman. The fully transcribed registries are each given the year, page and source number, in brackets [ ], as they were recorded in the original books.

To purchase a photocopy of an original record from this series please contact the author through the Old New Hanover Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 2536, Wilmington, NC 28402 or email JosephSheppard@myway.com . Saint Mary Parish (www.thestmaryparish.org) owns the original St. Thomas Registers. Permission was given by the Very Rev. James Labosky and the Rev. John Gillespie, former and current pastor of St. Mary Church, to Joseph Sheppard to reproduce these St. Thomas Registers through the Old New Hanover Genealogical Society. Reproduction or downloads of this online source must be granted from the author.

* The St. Thomas Baptism Register   has side notes where someone wrote the family name of the baptized child. In the case of the Gaynons the added side entry is incorrect with the surname of Torpon. H. P. Northrop
[1866, page 40 #545]
*Mrs. Dickinson is a mystery. On April 13, 1863, the Rev. Thomas Murphy married Thaddeus Dickinson to Catherine W. Evans. But, the Wilmington Daily Journal   newspaper printed a marriage notice for Dickinson and Bridget W. Evans on April 13, 1863. On April 11, Dickinson and a Mrs. Bridget W. Evans applied for a marriage license in New Hanover County. Thaddeus C. Dickinson died June 13, 1867 and they buried his remains in Oakdale Cemetery. There was no death registry with St. Thomas nor was a death notice printed in local newspapers. By the 1870 Federal Census for New Hanover County, an Ann Dickinson is listed with a 4 year old Thaddeus and ten year old Jane Evans. Walter Dickinson is fourteen years old and living in the household of Wm. E. Davis. Later, Mrs. Ann Dickinson died on September 29, 1879 and they buried her remains in Oakdale Cemetery. The Rev. P. Moore performed the funeral obsequies for Mrs. Dickinson on September 30, 1879, but he didn't use her first name or spouse's name. Local newspapers also did not print a death notice. It is inconclusive that Bridget Spencer Dickinson and Catherine or Ann Dickinson are indeed the same person but most likely they were.
Sept. 14 I baptized Thadeus Dickinson, born May 28.
P.P. Thaddeus C. Dickinson & Bridget Spencer.
